On vacation in the Alpes de Haute Provence, there’s no shortage of places of interest to visit, promising a rich and varied program. The region abounds in grandiose natural sites not to be missed, from the Verdon gorges to the lavender-blossomed Valensole plateau, via the Allos and Serre-Ponçon lakes and the Bonette pass.
There are plenty of historic sites to visit in the Alpes de Haute Provence region, including the citadel of Sisteron, considered by Henry IV to be the most powerful in his kingdom. Eight centuries of history overlook the village from a promontory that offers panoramic views 150 km in all directions. Another site not to be missed, the Provencal town of Forcalquier hosts the region’s largest market in its historic center. Its built heritage bears witness to its past as a Comtale town. Also worth a visit in the Alpes de Haute Provence is the Vauban citadel of Entrevaux and its medieval village, which organizes major festivities around the Middle Ages.
A mythical itinerary, the Napoleon route taken by the Emperor in 1815 on his return from Elba passes through some of the most important sites in the Alpes de Haute Provence: the picturesque village of Castellane, the typical villages of Senez and Barrême, Digne-les-Bains and Malijai.

With its cliffs and 70 canyons, the region’s terrain lends itself particularly well to canyoning and rock climbing: the Verdon’s walls are covered with 1,500 climbing routes, and there are other climbing spots to discover in Annot and Ubaye. The Via Ferrata in Digne-les-Bains is a must. Thrill-seekers won’t want to miss a paragliding experience over the region’s sublime landscapes.
